It is the ecclesiastical seat of the Metropolitan archdiocese of Cebu, In August 14,1595, Cebu was established and in April 28, 1934 was become the metropolitan archdiocese with the dioceses of Dumaguete, Maasin, Tagbilaran and Talibon.
Construction of this Cathedral took long due to unexpected event such as the death of the Bishop who headed the construction and the funds for construction of the church diverted to the moro wars.The Cathedral was mostly destroyed by allied bombing in World War II and it was quickly rebuilt in the 1950s under the supervision of Architect Jose Zaragosa, during the incumbency of Archbishop Gabriel Reyes .
